Goodbye, 2007........ Hello, 2008.
It's that time of year again - time for the infamous New Year's Resolution.
My guess would be that for most of you reading this, you will probably make the same (or similar to) fitness resolution that you made last year and the year before and the year before that. And if you are like most people that I know, one of your top resolutions will be to get into better shape this year. Shaping up for the New Year is a phenomenal goal to have. But my question would be, “Is making the same “Resolution” year after year working for you”! In other words did you reach that goal that you set on January 1, 2007?
Did you know that 80% of New Year's Resolutions are unsuccessful and most give up on their resolution within 2 months of talking about it?
That means that out of your 10 closest friends 8 will fail to meet their goal - So the odds of success are not in your favor. The good news is that you have what it takes to be one of the elite 20% who do meet their goal.
How? Lets start by re framing or renaming our New Years Resolution to a phrase that is fitness related.
How about “Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008”.
Now read on for the guidelines that will guarantee your “Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008” or “UFO-2008”!
Write Your "Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008" as an Official Contract to yourself, sign it in front of a person who supports your efforts 100%. Next, give a copy to that person who you know will check in with you weekly to make sure you are following through on your commitment to your written contract.
I know it sounds very official, but that is precisely the point. You will in essence be writing a personal mission statement to yourself committing to the success of your new endeavor in which you will be creating a healthier more fit YOU!
First step: Take your UFO-2008 and write it out in very specific detail. Detail very specifically and exactly what you desire your health and fitness outcome to be in the following year and for years to come. You might even want to express it in a format that has you thinking of this as a lifestyle change for life.
Second step: Next to your health and fitness outcome, write down what massive action you must take in order to achieve your UFO-2008.
Third step: Write down what benefits you will achieve by taking massive action on your UFO-2008.
The forth and final step: Sign and date the contract, post a copy where you can view it daily, than give a copy to the person that will support you 100 % throughout the whole process.
Here is an example of the 4 step process……
Step #1: “My Commitment to the Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008 is as follows:”
“Starting January 1, 2008, I commit to getting my whole body in the best shape of my life by dropping as much unhealthy body fat as my body will naturally allow, safely. By achieving this outcome, I will experience all the positive things that will come out of being healthy and fit which include, having more energy and vigor throughout each day, knowing that my body will become as healthy on the inside as is is on the outside, and feeling more alive and alert to handle the demands that are placed on me in all areas of my daily life“.
Step #2: In order to meet my Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008, I will take massive action by......
* Moving my body with some type of cardio and weight training at least 4 days each week, one half hour to forty five minutes each day. If I have challenges getting the ball rolling than I will hire the services of a Fitness Professional to direct and guide me along the way.
* Focusing on consuming healthy foods and lots of fresh water throughout each day. I will be more aware of the areas of the grocery store that I must stay away from that do not serve my need in becoming more fit instead I will turn my focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. I will carry with me throughout the day, a big bottle of water with my goal to consume at least 2 of these each day of the week
* Maintaining a positive outlook by focusing on what I do want instead of what I do not want. I will use words that serve me in a positive way and will purchase a personal development book or cd that I can reference to help me keep on track. If I must I will ask for the services of a professional to suggest a book or CD that will help me to stay focused on while on my journey.
Step #3: The benefit of me following through on this massive action plan are as follows.....
* I will build more lean muscle tissue by adding strength training along with my cardio to my fitness program which in turn will help burn more body fat.
* I will become more energized, alert, and motivated with the healthy foods and water I will consume daily.
* I will focus on what I do want instead of what I do not want, and by doing this I am setting myself up for a much greater chance of success in obtaining my ultimate outcome.
Step # 4: Write at the very bottom of the contract something like the following:
"I (your name) commit to taking full responsibility by following through on the above mentioned process to make the Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008 a reality for me. I deserve to live a healthy and more fit life so I can function at a higher mental, emotional, and physical level as I go through my daily duties of everyday life. I commit to this now as "preventive medicine" to live a fuller, more balanced, fun life that will take me well into my 90's and beyond."
Sign your name and date the contract, post a copy where you can view it daily, maybe in more than one place, than give a copy to someone who supports you 100 %.
Be realistic and aim for outcomes that are attainable.
As you go about designing your Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008 it is important that aim for outcomes that are realistic and attainable. A safe and effective fat loss program will yield 1 to 2 pounds of fat loss a week, not 20. Beware of the big “hype” of the infomercials, supplements and "quick fix diets" that promise accelerated fat loss. Instead, plan on losing weight slowly. Sure we all want instant results, but it’s almost impossible to undo years of inactivity and poor nutrition overnight. Be patient. Fast weight loss (more than 1-2 lbs per week) in the long run is disaster and disappointment waiting to happen.
If you have been working out regularly 2 days per week at one half hour each session, than you might want to up your workouts to 3 or 4 days per week at thirty five to forty five minutes each session. An unrealistic goal here would be going from 2 days each week at one half hour each session to 6 days per week at one hour each session. Build up your training time and intensity slowly to avoid burnout. Quite honestly, for most people the hardest part is "getting there". Remember you also want to have fun with your workout experience so as soon as you commit to going out for your jog or as soon as you step foot in the gym, take a deep breath, know your outcome, and than get to work. Once you start the process, you will feel more energy throughout your whole body, mainly because the body was meant for movement not to sit around and do nothing.
Now that I have provided for you the tools to a successful health and fitness outcome you must now take the massive action needed to make this plan work. After reading through and understanding what you have just read, put everything aside so you can focus on what it is that you really want most for your Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008. You will need a journal of some type or you can do it on your computer. Of course you will need a pen to make it permanent or fingers that type well. Give yourself at least a half hour maybe one full hour to dig deep into your mind so you can be specific with your words that will in the long run be the driving force behind the success of your UFO-2008.
Now put this reading aside for now and go do your homework!
So now that you have written out your Ultimate Fitness Outcome-2008 I want to throw in a few "must dos" to help you maintain your focus.
Visualize or “See” Your Success.
This can rally make or break any goal that you set whether it has to do with fitness, finances, career, relationships, etc. Visualization is the easiest part of this whole process and can all but assure that you attain your outcome, but it is also the most overlooked. The power of creative visualization is undeniable and has been proven time and time again by go-getter's such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, Einstein, Napoleon, Andrew Carnegie and yours truly, ME!
The way to use creative visualization to reach your Ultimate Fitness Outcome 2008 is to visualize yourself in a place where you have already achieved this outcome. Real important to keep your focus on what it is you DO WANT throughout the whole visualisation process. Close your eyes for a moment and see the end result before it happens. Feel the excitement of something new that is going to transform your every day life. In this visualization, your ultimate goal has been met and you are now committed to working out, staying positive, and eating healthy as a newly created daily habit. See your body getting leaner and stronger. The clothes that once fit tight now feel much looser. Your energy level is always in an “up” mode and you can see how amazing your body is looking as it reshapes itself. You see yourself standing tall, shoulders back, belly tucked in tight and your face is in “happy mode“. You can feel a brand new confidence building and with that confidence you can even see the reactions of those who you surround yourself with as they to see the "new you" coming into fruition.
As you go through this creative visualization remember what accomplishing your goal feels like. How does it make you feel to experience all that you have accomplished? This visualization experience will keep you motivated and will help pull you through the inevitable difficulties of making the changes you want. Practice this visualization for 3-5 minutes every day.

You must SEE IT. You must FEEL IT. You must BELIEVE IN IT. You must DO IT.....24/7!!
By committing to CANI and the SEE, FEEL, BELIEVE, and DO it theory, you put yourself in the drivers seat and now have total control of your health and fitness destiny. WOW!!! How cool is that!
You must always be aware and understand the power of the Universal Law of Attraction which states: Where you put your focus….. good, bad or indifferent….. than that is exactly what will ultimately manifest into your life.
Once again I will state that you must keep your focus on what you do want NOT on what you don't want.
For example if I ask you “What benefits do you want from your fitness training and healthy nutrition this year?” - and you answer back with - “I do not want to be fat and out of shape”, well you have not answered the question properly, you just told me what you do not want. So what you do not want will continue to persist as long as that is where your focus is.
A better answer might be when I ask “What benefits do you want from your fitness training and healthy nutrition this year?” - Your answer back would be something like - “I want a body and mind that is fit and full of energy. I want to stand tall and be proud of my accomplishments of dropping the unhealthy body fat off my body. I am a lean, mean, fit, machine in training that has only a positive outcome in sight"!
If you get anything out of this whole process please understand that you must stay aware of where you put your focus and the words that you speak to yourself and around others. Whether you know it or not, you, your mind, is always thinking or talking.
Stay away from phrases in which you use in your vocabulary words like:
Could-a... Would-a... Should-a... Maybe... Someday... But... If only... I Can‘t...
If you catch yourself saying something like “I can’t do that”, immediately acknowledge the old behavior by saying “That’s what I use to say and that negative phrase is no longer allowed in my vocabulary.” and than re-frame it by stating “I must do it now to attain the result I set out to achieve!” Make sure you take the massive action needed immediately to achieve what you just committed to doing.
Three words to use repeatedly in your daily vocabulary to insure success are:
I CAN! I WILL! I MUST!
I can do this... I will do this... I must do this … NOW!!
Any person that you know to be successful in any venture of their life, at some point on their journey to succeed, said these words to themselves. This goes for goals in health and fitness, business, sports, relationships, etc. All great personal growth/development coaches and authors preach one sure key to success…… “Repetition is the Mother of Skill”.
Form a Support Network or Team Up With a Buddy
I know what you are thinking - "Why would I tell other people about my health and fitness outcome when I may not ever meet it? Wouldn't that be really embarrassing if I did not meet it"? Absolutely Not - You will meet your goal because you just signed a contract in which you committed to taking the massive action needed to achieve your outcome. What the heck, why not add a little added "leverage" on your shoulders and allow yourself the opportunity in which you will have to answer to other people who really do care about your well being.
Positive friends and family members can be a treasure chest filled with support and encouragement. Notice I used the word positive. Do not seek the people that continue to put you down or people that will give you negative criticism. Listen only to "constructive feedback" NOT "constructive criticism". These are two totally different ways of getting feedback. Listen, you only need 1 or 2 people on your support team who will be there for you and help you through. You may even find that someone you know also shares a similar goal - and now you have a built in buddy for motivation.
Meet with a Reputable Professional.
